Why go to the Moon?
We choose to go to the Moon! We choose to go to the Moon...We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard
Going to Mount Everest or K2 or Antarctica with astronaut suits without using external oxygen would be both challenging and expensive. But why?
Without profit motive one could achieve great wonders - like climbing the El Capitan but industry cannot be created on will and vision alone without unit margins.
So there is no commodity that could be mined on the Moon with sufficient demand here on Earth to fund space industry with sales.
Except cryptocurrency
If you could create self-replicating bitcoin or ethereum miner on the Moon ( which has a lot of silicon in it’s crust ) and hook it up to solar panels ( you could probably manufacture them there as well) you could decimate earth based crypto mining and capture almost 100% of the transaction fees and PoW rewards
